Manchester City FC History and Highlights.

You wouldn’t have believed it 20 years ago, but Manchester City FC is one of the biggest names in global sports. In a few short years, the English football club has transformed itself from being Manchester United’s noisy neighbors to the dominant Premier League team of the modern era.

Since being bought by Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, no team has won as many Premier League titles as their impressive six total. However, despite their domination on the domestic front, their success is yet to translate onto the continental stage. The 2021 Champions League final 1-0 defeat to Chelsea is the closest they’ve come yet.

Still, the consistency with which they reach the competition’s latter stages suggests the club’s fans — collectively known as “The Citizens” — won’t have much longer to wait.

Team History

Founding and Early Years

Two churchwardens founded Manchester City FC in 1980. The wardens hoped to curb alcoholism and local gang violence by giving local men something better to do. In November that year, they played their first ever match, a 2-1 defeat to Macclesfield.

Initial Success

It would be 19 years until the club won its first honors by taking home the Second Division title. The win earned the team promotion to English football’s highest level, the First Division.
Manchester City FC adjusted well to the upper echelons of British football. In 1904, just a few short years after gaining promotion, City won the most prestigious trophy of all, the FA Cup, alongside a second-place showing in the League.

First Division Success and Failure

Man City would have to wait until 1937 to win their first domestic top division trophy, and it started a strange couple of years at the club. Despite winning the league just a year earlier, they were relegated in 1938. The relegation happened despite the fact they also finished the season as the league’s top scorers!

Post-War Years

The post-war years contained few highlights for Manchester City FC, besides the 1956 3-1 FA Cup final win against Birmingham City. Many British football fans remember this match since the Manchester City FC goalkeeper Bert Trautmann unknowingly broke his neck during the game and only found out via X-Ray 2 days later. Nevertheless, he managed to play until the final whistle.

The club mostly yoyo-ed between the First and Second Divisions until the turn of the century.

The majority of City’s silverware has come since the Abu Dhabi United Group purchased the club in 2008. With the change in ownership came an influx of global superstars and, not long after, hauls of domestic trophies. The first winner’s medal of the new era came after beating Stoke 1-0 in the FA Cup final in 2011.

That Aguero goal and English dominance

The year after, City delivered arguably the greatest moment in Premier League history when their two injury-time goals on the last day of the season meant they beat rivals Manchester United to claim the Premier League title. They’ve now won eight major domestic trophies since the new owners came in and confidently hold the top perch in English football.

While the current stadium’s official capacity is 53,400, the club holds the record for the largest ever home attendance by an English club with a much larger number. 84,569 fans squeezed in to see the team play against Stoke in 1934 at Maine Road

City moved to their current stadium in 2003, which was initially built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games at a cost of £110 million.

There are plans in the pipeline to increase the current stadium’s capacity to 60,000, making it one of the largest stadiums in the Premier League.
