Today, Saracens Rugby Club, compete in the English Premiership Rugby competition and are regarded as one of the most successful teams in world rugby. But how they got there is a long and inspiring story that shows how anything is possible if you never give up on your dreams.

Founding and Early Years

In 1876, the Old Boys of the Philological School in Marylebone got together in North London and founded a rugby team. At the time, they had no idea they would one day become one of the most successful teams in world rugby.

Just two years after their foundation, the club merged with the neighboring club of Crusaders in 1878. In the early years, the Saracens were a local team with little success. They struggled to find their footing and often found themselves at the bottom of the standings.

However, they never gave up and continued to work hard, even if, over the next few decades, they would experience plenty of lows to go with the highs. But, through it all, they remained united as a team and continued to chase their dream of becoming a superpower in rugby.

Bramley Rd Stadium

Throughout their formative years, they played on nine different grounds. Finally, In 1940, Saracens Football Club found a permanent home and moved to Bramley Rd. However, the outbreak of WWII meant the club wouldn’t play a match there until 1945.

The Modern Era

The 1970s

The club had a particularly successful run in the tournament that was then known as the National Cup but is now called the Tetley Bitter Cup in the 1970s, when they made it all the way to the semi-finals of that competition.

The team continued to grow and develop from there on. During this time, they became one of England’s most well-known rugby teams. They also started to attract some big names to their ranks, including England internationals such as Mel Williams and Floyd Steadman.

Signs of Major Success

It was at this time that they finally began to see some signs of success. The first was when they won their first Courage League National Division Two in 1988-1989. The Courage League championship was a precursor to the RFU Championship.

This was a huge moment for the club, and it demonstrated that they could compete with the best teams in England.

The teams’ success continued into the 1980s and 1990s. During this time, they won numerous trophies, including two more RFU Club Championships and three Premiership titles. They also produced some of the biggest names in world rugby, such as Martin Johnson and Jonny Wilkinson.

Tetley’s Bitter Cup

The 1997-98 Tetley’s Bitter Cup, which was the 27th edition of England’s top union club membership, was also won by Saracens for the first time by defeating Wasps in Twickenham Stadium in front of a crowd attendance of over 65,000 people.

Trophies and Notable Achievements

Over the years, the team has racked up many trophies to its name at both the national and European levels. Here are some highlights.

Most European Trophies

The club has been victorious in 10 major trophy competitions during their history. After claiming victory against Exeter with a final score of 28-25, they have now tied the record for most European championships won with their accomplishment as of the year 2019.

Saracens Players Fill Twenty Percent of World Cup Squad

A significant accomplishment for the Saracens Football Club was the club’s players’ inclusion on the final roster for 20 percent of the Rugby World Cup squad.

English Premiership Titles

The team also captured the English Premiership five times (most recently in 2019). In the latest Gallagher Premiership Rugby 2021-22, They stood at number one with 17 wins to their name. In the nail-biting close final game, they had a good, competitive game but lost to Leicester, with a final score of 12-15.
