Leicester City FC: Shock Premier League Win, Can They Repeat?

Leicester City FC History and Highlights.

Leicester City Football Club (LCFC) was founded in 1884 as Leicester Fosse Football Club. However, while they have a long history, they didn’t achieve much success until the early 2000s, when they were promoted to the Premier League.

They are also known as the Foxes and play their home games at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester City was founded in 1884. At the time, it went by the name Leicester Fosse.

Early Years in Football League

Leicester Fosse entered the Football League in 1894. In its first few years in the Second Division, it experienced several underwhelming campaigns. But the club finally earned a First Division promotion in 1908.

Instant Demotion

The club struggled in its first year in the first division and faced relegation after its first season.

What’s more, the season left a sour taste in the mouths of the supporters. This was because the team was beaten 12-0 by Nottingham Forest, which is still the club’s worst loss in its history.

Post-War Years

After facing a financial crisis due to the first world war, Leicester Fosse was renamed Leicester City FC when it reformed in 1919.

Following this, the club slowly rebuilt itself, eventually returning to the First Division in 1925. However, they were demoted back to the second division not long after.

The 1930s had been relatively unproductive for the club, and, by the time league football returned after WWII, Leicester City FC was still in the second division.

The Late 1900s

In 1949, Leicester City FC made it to the FA cup final. A few years later, in 1957, the club finally earned a promotion back to the first division of English Football.

Holding On

The promotion to the first division of English Football was a significant achievement for the Leicester City FC. But they faced a tough reentry and struggled to hold on. However, after narrowly avoiding relegation in its first season back, it started to establish some better results.

First League Cup and FA Cup Finals

Leicester City FC won its first League cup title in 1964. It also reached the FA cup final in 1961, 1963, and 1969.

A Run of Relegations and Promotions

After a long run in the first division, LCFC was unfortunately demoted in 1978.

Then, into the 1980s, LCFC experienced two further relegations and two promotions.

However, the period did have a notable highlight — three out of LCFC players (Alan Smith, Gary Lineker, and Steve Lynex) scored up to 150 goals in-between three different seasons.

The 1990s

The era of the 1990s saw an incredible total of seven appearances of Leicester City FC at Wembley Stadium. Their 1994 and 1996 appearances led to victories in the play-offs, ultimately leading to promotion to the Premier League.

The Modern Era

In 2002, LCFC was relegated from the Premier League and went through a phase of administration beginning in October 2002. Nonetheless, they were promoted back to the Premier League in 2003, only to be demoted back to the lower division in the following year, 2004.

Mixed Results

After LCFC ownership changed hands in 2007, they experienced their first demotion to league one. However, they were promoted back to the Championship in 2008-09 after they won the league one title.

A Return to Form

In 2015-16, Leicester City shocked the world by winning the Premier League title against all odds. This was one of their biggest achievements to date and was carried out under the leadership of coach Claudio Ranieri.

Leadership Changes

Sadly, Ranieri was dismissed by the club in February 2017, just nine months after leading them to victory. However, they found a worthy replacement in Craig Shakespeare, who later handed over to Claude Puel that same year. Unfortunately, Claude Puel was the manager of Leicester City for just two years, and he was dismissed and replaced by Brenan Rodgers in 2019, who is still the manager to date.

Leicester Today

Since the 2016 Premier League victory, LCFC has continued to be a force to be reckoned with in English football, reaching the Champions League quarterfinals in 2016-17 and qualifying for Europe again in 2017-18.

With a young, bright team and a determined coach, anything is possible! LCFC Fans can be confident that the club will make every effort to live up to their hopes and win further titles in the following years.
