Timo Werner: Player History, Team Signings, and Transfers
Timo Werner History
Expected to be one of the league’s most feared strikers when he moved to Chelsea, Timo Werner’s time in the Premier League wasn’t quite the success Blues fans hoped it would be. Still, fans in Germany rate him highly for his performances for Leipzig and the national team.

Developing in Germany
Born in Stuttgart, Germany to a sporting family, Timo’s dad Gunther was also a football player. Timo Werner joined Stuttgart’s academy at a young age and quickly moved through the youth ranks. He was still only 16 years old when he started participating in the under-19 setup.
Even while competing with players much more physically developed than him, Werner started making an impact with his prolific goalscoring ability. His 2013 Gold U-17 Fritz Walter Medal marked Werner out as one of the brightest young stars in German football.
Going Senior
Werner’s first taste of professional football came on the European stage in 2013 when he played for Stuttgart in the Europa League, setting a club record for the team’s youngest-ever player. His Bundesliga goal against Frankfurt later that season also made him the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history.
His development started to accelerate as he adjusted to top-level football, and his appearances in the first team became more and more regular over the next 3 years.
Moving to Leipzig
At the end of the 2015-16 season, Stuttgart was relegated. With Werner being one of the hottest young prospects in the world, it was clear it was time for the energetic forward to move on. RB Leipzig had just been promoted to the Bundesliga and was looking to add to their team to prepare for life in the top league, and Werner was a perfect fit.
He would go on to be a huge success at Leipzig, helping cement their position in the top flight and becoming one of the league’s most prolific goalscorers. He spearheaded the team’s journey to qualifying for the Champions League for the first time at the end of a season in which he scored 21 league goals.
Moving to the elite
By the time Europe’s top clubs had come sniffing around, Werner had become Leipzig’s record goalscorer with 95 goals.
With such a record, Chelsea expected Werner to play a key role in the club’s push for trophies when he was signed for almost £50 million. However, while he featured consistently for a side that went on to win the Champions League, his finishing constantly let him down, and his goalscoring rate failed to match his transfer fee.
The arrival of Romelu Lukaku in Werner’s second season put the German’s place in the team under further threat, and by the end of the 2021-22 season, it became clear his time at Chelsea was limited.
Returning to Leipzig
The club that had forged his reputation was more than happy to take Werner back, paying just over half what they’d sold him for 2 years earlier.
Despite his inconsistent spell at Chelsea, Werner is still highly regarded in the Bundesliga and the German national team, for whom he still features regularly, often cutting in from the left wing.
He has 24 goals in 55 appearances for his country to date. Hoping he can do the same in the Football World Cup this 2022.
