Not many 22-year-olds can say they’ve already played for Valencia, Manchester City, Barcelona, and the Spanish national team. Ferran Torres’s talent is not up for debate, and the only thing still undecided is just how far his ability can take him.

Starting in Spain

Ferran Torres was born in a town in north-eastern Valencia in 2000. He was only six when he joined Valencia’s youth team. He would then go on to make his senior debut with the club in a substitute appearance for the reserve team in 2016.

Breaking Into the First Team

In January 2018, Ferran Torres earned a promotion to Valencia’s first team. He had made his debut for the side a couple of months earlier in a 4-1 victory over Real Zaragoza. When he played his first La Liga match in a 1-2 loss to Eibar, Torres became the first footballer born in 2000 to play in the league.

Torres wouldn’t take long to get his first taste of success, gaining minutes in the team’s 2018-19 Copa Del Rey campaign. However, he was an unused substitute in the 2-1 victory against Barcelona in the final.

In 2019 Torres became Valencia’s youngest ever Champions League goalscorer when he found the back of the net in a 4-1 win against Lille. He made his 50th appearance for Valencia that year, and by then, Europe’s elite teams had started circling.

Move to Manchester City

In August 2020, Ferran Torres finally stepped up when he signed for Manchester City for an estimated £20 million. Opportunities were limited initially, but he did well to make the most of the minutes that came his way. A month after signing, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 win against Burnley in the League Cup.

Opportunities came more frequently in the Champions League, and Torres scored on his first outing in the tournament in sky blue in a 3-1 victory against Portuguese team Porto. When he scored in his next European appearance, he set a record of becoming the youngest Spanish player to score 3 consecutive goals in the competition, with the first of his streak coming on his last Champions League outing for Valencia.

The highlight of the season came when he scored a crucial hat-trick as Manchester City beat Newcastle United 4-3

Injury and Transfer

Agonizingly, a serious injury put him out of contention just as it seemed Torres was hitting his stride. With his place in the team up for question upon his return, Torres elected to move to Barcelona in January 2022.

His position at Barcelona is less under threat, and so far he has settled in well at the Catalan giants. The regular game time he is likely to continue getting at Barcelona will also be welcomed by supporters of the Spanish national team, for who Torres has scored 13 goals in 29 appearances.

The hat-trick he scored for his country against Germany in November 2020 shows that the young winger is just as comfortable playing internationally as he is for his club. The 2022 World Cup may present the opportunity to finalize his transition from a promising youngster to a global superstar, by taking his team to the 2022 Qatar World Cup Final.
