Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque is one of the oldest French Rugby Union teams. The professional Rugby team dates to 1913, nearly 109 years old, also making them one of the oldest, most storied Rugby teams in the world. Based in the Basque city of Biarritz, the team is known as one of the top divisions of French Rugby.

The early years and formation of Biarritz are inspiring and interesting at the same time. They started as a struggling team, and over time they became the undefeated champions! Days in and days out, Biarritz Olympique PB proved themselves in the world of Rugby.
The Early Period
Extending back to the late 19th century, Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque formed after the fusion of two exciting clubs. Biarritz Stade and Biarritz Sporting Club merged to form a fascinating French Rugby team.
Though formed in 1913, Biarritz Olympique made its way to the finals for the first time in 1934. Unfortunately, they got defeated by Aviron Bayonnais. Instead of losing focus, the team came back stronger in 1935 and seized their first victory against USA Perpignan.
They became the winner of the Yves du Manoir Challenge for the first time. With 9 points to 3, Biarritz Olympique was declared winners against USA Perpignan.
They continued the hard work and became a champion in 1939 for the second time against USA Perpignan. In 1938 Biarritz Olympique lost the championship to USA Perpignan before winning in 1939.
The Era of 1980s and 1990s
During the era of 1980s and 1990s, Biarritz Olympique faced failures and disappointments.
After 1937, Biarritz Olympique appeared for the second time in Yves du Manoir Challenge and lost against RC Narbonne. They lost their first European Rugby Cup competition and did not make past the pool stage in 1997.
Biarritz appeared second time in 1998 – 1999 in the European Rugby Cup competition and finished in third place in the pool stage. The season year, they appeared the third time in the challenge and got knocked off in the quarter-finals.
The Period After 2000
It marked the revival of the French Rugby team, where their hard work started to pay off again. In 2000, the French Rugby team appeared in Yves du Manoir Challenge for the third time and marked their second victory against CA Brive.
Biarritz Olympique became the Champion of France for the third time in 2002 against Agen in a nail-biting match. Marking their success for the fourth time in 2005, Biarritz Olympique defeated Stade Français club in a rugged game.
In 2006 Biarritz became Champion of France fifth time, marking victory against Stade Toulousain. They also became Vice European Champion the same year. They won Amlin Challenge Cup against Toulon in 2012.
It was around this time that Biarritz Renovated their beloved stadium, the Parc des Sports Aguiléra, which houses not only their matches, but also other events, and even an international match between the French Barbarians and Argentina.
Currently, Biarritz Olympique is playing in the 2021 – 22 Top 14 season, and although this time around they haven’t put up the scores they were hoping they would, this is a team that has proven time and time again they are capable of getting better and more mature with time, and nobody is doubting they will bounce back from the automatic relegation they are facing this Top 14 season, becoming an incredible Rugby professional team in one of the toughest, most competitive Rugby Leagues in the world.
