In Panthers vs. Buccaneers 01/01/23, two sides face each other at the Raymond James Stadium in what promises to be one of New Year’s Day’s closest matches.
Panthers vs. Buccaneers 01/01/23 Preview Games and History
One of football’s more modern fixtures has been evenly balanced since they first locked horns in 1995. Tampa Bay was victorious on this series’ debut with a 20-13 scoreline on Carolina’s home turf.
Initially, the two teams only played sporadically, but they now face off twice in most years. The Panthers more often get the upper hand, leading the series 25-19 currently. They naturally have scored more points in total in the tie, too, with 958 to the Buccaneers’ 845.
Panthers vs. Buccaneers 01/01/23 Odds and Statistics
During those 44 matches, the teams have never met in the postseason. There have been some periods of dominance in the regular season for both sides, though, with the Panthers enjoying more success in the early 2000s and the Buccaneers getting the upper hand more often than not in recent years.
The last time the sides played, Tampa Bay looked out of their depth, though, only managing to get 3 points on the board whilst Carolina racked up 21. They’ll be hoping to bring a bit more bite during the Panthers vs. Buccaneers 01/01/23 fixture.
Panthers vs. Buccaneers 01/01/23 NFL Betting Tips: The Season So Far
Panthers
Interim coach Steve Wilks has quietly been doing a good job even whilst his side sits with a poor record of just 5-9 this season. The thing is, most of those losses came under Matt Rhule, who’d accumulated a record of 1-4 in the early weeks of the season before his replacement came in. That means Wilks is now almost breaking even with a team that previously looked abysmal.
If Wilks had been in charge from the beginning of the season, then the Panthers might already have the NFC South wrapped up due to the lack of competition and how forgiving the league is. Optimism was at a minimum when he came in. He deserves great praise for turning things around and currently looks like the side’s star of the season.
He has tried to keep expectations to an absolute minimum despite his relative success, though. He told reported that he doesn’t want “anybody in this building talking about playoffs” after losing 24-16 to the Steelers and damaging Tampa Bay’s chances of catching up with the division’s leaders, the Buccaneers.
However well the coach does, though, there are no two ways around the fact that he’s working with rather limited talent on his side. The side’s rushing game tends to be limited, and the passing game can’t get much of a rhythm going when the QBs get so little support.
It’s still in their own hands to go all the way to the postseason though, even if Steve Wilks doesn’t want anyone to think about it.
Buccaneers
Tampa Bay is scoring at a rate of barely half what they were during the first several weeks of the season. While the talent is still there in flashes, they don’t strike fear into the heart of defenses anything like they used to when the season was getting started.
The holes in the defense, which have been visible for months, still haven’t been patched up yet, and all of this combines to mean Tampa Bay is in rough form as the season reaches crunch time.
They’re still in control of their own destiny, though, sitting in the top place in the NFC South.
