Commanders vs. 49ers 12/24/22 Preview Games and History
These two teams go a long way back, first squaring off in 1952 when the 49ers beat the Redskins 23-17. They’ve played a whipping 34 times in total, with San Francisco confidently in the lead in the series with the overall record sat at 21-12-1. The 49ers also stand clear on the total points scored with 796 to the Commanders’ 630.
There were some big scoring victories for both sides in the early days, with results like 41-7 and 35-3 giving 49ers fans especially worthy bragging rights while the fixture was still fairly new.
Commanders vs. 49ers 12/24/22 Odds and Statistics
Unsurprisingly the teams have ended up facing off against one another in the postseason more than a couple of times in all of the years since they first clashed heads.
Their first playoff game was in 1971 when the San Francisco 49ers only just barely managed to scrape through on a 24-20 win. It’s been a while since they came up against one another so late into the year though, with their last postseason coming in the 1993 playoffs when the 49ers won again, this time 20-13.
Washington is starting to claw their way back to equal terms in recent years, winning 2 of the last three games in the series. They won the last game in 2020, 23-15, and will be hoping to do the same in Commanders vs. 49ers 12/24/22.
Commanders vs. 49ers 12/24/22 NFL Betting Tips: The Season So Far
Commanders
The Commanders are in red-hot form at the moment, only losing 1 of their last 8 games. Their key to this dominance has been their impressive amount of time in possession, a category for which Washington ranks top of the league.
The side has started easing off on the passing game that wasn’t working so reliably for them and began to lean on their more accomplished running game. Unfortunately, part of the reason they can’t mix things quite as well as they’d perhaps like to is the inconsistency of starter QB Taylor Heinicke. While he has admittedly shown some moments of brilliance, he can hardly be relied on to get the team up the pitch at crucial moments, especially considering all of the possession his team earns from him.
That’s not been enough to hold the team back significantly, though, and is more of an area to look at for the future. The team has undeniably held up well, even as the NFC has proven far more competitive than many people predicted at the beginning of the season.
49ers
The 49ers have seen some close moments go their way and so are standing with a record slightly better than the Commanders at this point of the season with 9-4 compared to Washington’s 7-5-1.
The loss of Jimmy Grappolo to injury threatens to derail San Francisco’s success so far this season, with many fans looking to him as the spearhead for the side’s title charge. Backup Brock Purdy has a few moves of his own to show, though, and if he hits the ground running could keep the 49ers pushing on at their steady pace. He was quietly competent against the Miami Dolphins, but it remains to be seen if he can maintain the side’s high standards week after week.
