Cardinals vs. Falcons 01/01/23 Preview Games and History

These sides know each other very well, having played each other for almost 60 years. They first squared off in 1966 when the Falcons edged out a cagey game 16-10. The Cardinals didn’t let them get comfy with victory, though, and would go on to win the next 5 in the series. They have since held the overall lead between the sides.

This has always been a streaky matchup, with one side generally dominating over prolonged periods. However, Atlanta has found much more success in the modern age, with their first period of dominance only starting in the late 1990s. If they keep the form they’ve generally displayed in the fixture since then, then it shouldn’t be too long until they lead the series, which the Cardinals currently are winning 17-15. The Falcons already sit ahead on points scored, though, with 759 to the Cardinals’ 699.

Cardinals vs. Falcons Odds and Statistics

The one time these sides met in the postseason was in a 2009 Wild Card Game that the Cardinals won 30-24. This was achieved despite the side winning only 1 of the 6 previous games in the fixture, so they clearly know how to perform when the time calls.

More recently, things have been fairly even, with the Falcons winning 3 of the last 5. However, the Cardinals sneaked by with a 34-33 win when the sides last met in 2019. Will the outcome be different this time around in the Cardinals vs. Falcons 01/01/23 match?

Cardinals vs. Falcons 01/01/23 NFL Betting Tips: The Season So Far

Cardinals

Fans didn’t generally expect wonders when the season began but they’ve still been mostly let down by consistently underwhelming performances in 2022. 4-10 is a pretty abysmal record for any side, regardless of whether they’re expected to be peaking or not.

The main worry on everyone’s mind is still Kyler Murray’s knee injury which had all of Arizona biting their nails as soon as he went down without contact against the Patriots. The Cardinals’ passing game was already weak enough, though, and fans are probably less worried about the effect his absence will have on the rest of the season and instead will have their minds occupied with what it could mean for the beginning of the 2023 season.

The knock also means what could’ve been seen as a transition season now looks like it could come to be seen as a step backward if Murray is too much worse off in the long term. Preparation begins to look like limbo if areas of the team aren’t at least moving in the right direction as the season progresses, and it’s hard to identify many parts of the team that have progressed in 2022.

Falcons

The NFC South’s flimsy level of competition means that Atlanta’s 5-9 record isn’t bad enough to put them out of the playoff picture completely. Having said that, the offense needs to find its feet very quickly if the side is to make the most of the opportunity that’s been presented to the team.

The switch from Marcus Mariota and QB to rookie Desmond Ridder could be the catalyst for the Falcons to quickly find that much-needed form. Even if they can’t pick up enough steam in time, it gives the side an opportunity to start their transition in that area of the pitch. The Cardinals vs. Falcons 01/01/23 fixture provides a great opportunity for him to find his feet.
