This match is over. If you’re looking for the next El Clásico, check out our prediction of the upcoming El Clásico.
When the draw for the 2022-2023 LaLiga Santander season was announced, world football fans held their breath for the announcement of the official dates between archrivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid who meet twice a year for what is called “El Clásico” (“The Classic”). The rivalry between the two franchises has been going on since… the Copa de la Coronación in 1902. Statistically speaking, Real Madrid leads in head-to-head confrontations with 100 wins to Barcelona’s 97 with 52 draws, and we expect the El Clásico 2022-2023 edition to further add to Madrid’s statistical lead.
El Clásico Facts and Figures
El Clásico 2022-2023: Official Dates
The first match between RMA and FCB in this new season will be played at Santiago Bernabeu (in Madrid) on October 16, 2022. This date will coincide with the 9th matchday of the 2022-2023 La Liga season. The second match between the two sides will take place at Camp Nou (Barcelona) on March 19, 2022 during the 26th matchday of the 2022-2023 La Liga season.
As usual, some of the world top football stars will be facing each other during these “classics” although – for the first time in many years – both Cristiano Ronaldo (Madrid) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona) will be missing, with Ronaldo moving on to this old team, Manchester United, and Lionel Messi signing with Paris St Germain a couple of seasons ago. Both star players should be present during the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar though, and it may be the last time we see them during the World Cup as Ronaldo is 37 years old now and Messi 35.

A Game with Political Implications
One of the biggest sporting events in the world, with the highest viewership figures and global fan bases, El Clásico is also controversial from a political perspective as it represents a confrontation between two opposing political positions, with Real Madrid viewed as representing Spanish nationalism and Barcelona identified as representing Catalan nationalism. Phil Ball, the author of Morbo: The Story of Spanish Football, has this to say about El Clásico: “they hate each other with an intensity that can truly shock the outsider”.
It is true that the opposition between Real Madrid and Barcelona has long surpassed the dimension of football. Today, for most people, Barcelona is still considered as “the rebellious club“, as opposed to “Real Madrid’s conservatism and conformism”.
