A very tight Japan vs Croatia match took both teams beyond extra time when the regulation time ended with a 1-1 draw. As a result, we got to see the first penalty shootout of the 2022 World Cup – a shootout in which Croatia’s goalkeeper became the star of the match as he fended off all but one penalty kick by the Japanese side. In response, Croatia netted three penalty goals, resulting in a convincing 1-3 penalty shootout win.

However, while the results of the shootout were definitive, the match beforehand was anything but, with both Croatia and Japan taking an equal share of the limelight. With that said, Croatia did dominate ball possession, holding it for 59% of the match, although both sides took the same number of shots on goal.

When the match finally concluded in a tense 1-1 draw and headed into a penalty shootout, Japan would see its first, second, and fourth kick all stopped by Livakovic. On the other hand, Croatia’s shooters were far more successful, with Nikola Vlasic, Marcelo Brozovic, and Mario Pasalic all finding the back of the net. The shootout ended 1 – 3 in favor of the Croatian team.

Now the question is whether the Croatian players are up to the task of taking on the current World Cup favorites in Croatia vs Brazil.

The Brazilian team was far superior to South Korea in their round of 16 match. This was especially evident in the first half of the match, where they completely dominated, dribbling at will in a game that was theirs and no one else’s. They kept the ball, controlled their passes, and reached their opponents’ goal time after time in a masterful demonstration of why Brazil is the current favorite.

The first goal of the match would come from the foot of Vinícius Junior in just the 7th minute, and acted as a warning sign of what was to come. The next goal would be off a penalty kick scored by Neymar in his return from injury, as well as his debut as a goal scorer in this World Cup.

The next goal for Brazil would then come at minute 29, in a masterpiece of triangulation where Richarlison would start and finish the setup to score a spectacular goal. Then, shortly after at minute 36, Lucas Paquetá would join the party with another long-distance goal that would leave South Korea completely flustered.

In response, South Korea would only manage a single goal at minute 76. And while the execution was excellent, it was too little, too late.

Clearly, Brazil has the individual and collective talent to measure up to any opponent, which will have them confident about their chances in Brazil vs. Croatia.
