The Browns’ season has been mostly underwhelming, their 6-8 record representing that despite flashes of talent, fans go home disappointed more often than not.

One clear shining light throughout the year has been Donovan Peoples-Jones at wide receiver, who was initially a 6th-round pick but now ranks among the Browns’ most consistent performers week in and week out. His emergence has been especially useful, considering it was a position that had many fans worried at the beginning of the season. Turning the weak point of a team into its strength is no hard feat, although the more pessimistic among us may argue it’s merely the result of many other parts of the team looking like a weakness.

Deshaun Watson still plays with a faint question mark over his head. His absence of more than 2 years was always going to mean there’d be an adjustment period, and he doesn’t look like he’s completely out of his depth now, but he’s hardly returned in full swing. The return is made even tougher by the fact that most others on the pitch have the full momentum of a dozen or so game weeks of football behind them. There does seem to be progress, though and if he can keep picking up minutes, then he could be back to his best in time for next season.

There’s more good news for the Browns in that their defense seems to be improving with each passing week too. The big question is whether all these cogs started gathering speed soon enough to keep the postseason within reach. That currently looks unlikely.

Commanders

There’s been a lot to be positive about this season for Washington. The return of Darrick Forrest after the pain of an injury-disrupted debut season in 2021 is good news, and he now looks like a nailed-on starter.

The worse news for him is that he’s made his way into a team that now looks unlikely to reach the playoffs, although if they win out from here it wouldn’t be their presence would be well-earned.
